Best SketchUp Plugins for Architects: 10 Extensions Worth Learning

SketchUp's native tools are great for boxes and extrusions. The moment a project needs curved facades, organic roofs or repeated structural profiles, plugins do the heavy lifting. Here are ten extensions we use and teach in our SketchUp Advanced Architecture course, and what each one is best for. Under each plugin you will find the lesson number in the course where it is shown.
1. Profile Builder
Builds elements from a profile along a path: railings, beams, cladding, mullions, curbs. Change the profile once and every instance updates. Ideal for repetitive linear elements. In the course: lessons 19-23 (Profile Builder, Along Path, Library, Edit, Select/Trim/Hole).
2. Vertex Tools
Lets you edit individual vertices, edges and faces of complex geometry directly. Useful for shaping towers, canopies and other non-standard forms. In the course: lesson 30.
3. SubD
Subdivision modeling inside SketchUp. Smooth, organic surfaces from a simple low-poly cage. In the course: lesson 38.
4. Artisan
Organic modeling and sculpting tools for terrain, curved roofs and soft shapes. In the course: lesson 39.
5. Slicer 5
Cuts a model into sections or slices, handy for fabrication logic, layered towers and structural rhythm. In the course: lesson 32 (see also lesson 31, S4U Slice).
6. JointPushPull
Push/pull that works on curved and multi-face surfaces, so you can thicken shells and facades without manual rebuilding. In the course: lesson 18.
7. FFD (Free Form Deformation)
Deforms geometry inside a control lattice. Bend, twist and taper whole buildings in a few moves. In the course: lesson 26.
8. Curviloft
Creates smooth lofted surfaces between curves. A good starting point for fluid shells and roofs. In the course: lesson 13.
9. 1001bit Tools
A collection of tools for architectural elements such as stairs, roofs and wall-related tasks. In the course: lesson 16.
10. Helix
Generates spiral forms, useful for spiral stairs, twisting columns and towers. In the course: used in the Wooden Tower example scene (there is no standalone Helix lesson).
How to choose
Start with the problem, not the plugin: repeated profiles (Profile Builder), organic forms (SubD, Artisan), editing complex geometry (Vertex Tools), deforming a whole massing (FFD). Learn two or three well before adding more.
